I would be thinking in terms of cardboard boxes…..
Cardboard boxes can be turned into all sorts of home dec items. If you want visible, think cubbies using cardboard boxes. Use glued on fabric (i.e. sheets or other linens from the thrift store) to cover and decorate, paint (i.e. mis-mixed paint or something from freecycle.org), or paper (i.e. brown mailing wrap which is cheap, gift wrap for more pizazz, or a mix using the gift wrap as an accent). You can use slightly smaller boxes as insert boxes or cubbie boxes. Ideally, all of the boxes forming the cubbie will be of the same size.
On a smaller scale, you can make a number of different types of units with drawers. You will need a larger, outer box for a frame. Then a series of smaller cardboard boxes to use as drawers, flat pieces to use as shelves, or constructed drawers. Suspend them on rails glued to the inside edges of the outer frame. Make the rails out of strips of thick cardboard, rails made of strips of cardboard glued to make thicker laminated pieces, or wood strips called square stock and found in the crafting section of a hardware store. You can make hinges out of tape or even use lighter weight actual hardware. Likewise, you can use jewelry box, wood box, and other lighter metal hardware fasteners, corners, and other hardware. For decoration, you still have paint, fabric, and paper.
So what would you make? How about a: jewelry box; small item container; puzzle. lego, or craft caddy; or a Barbie trunk complete with a space for Barbie, accessory drawers, and hang-ups.
Cereal type boxes can be cut down to make magazine caddies.
