Day 12 – How do you recycle …
… over 100 video tapes? We don’t watch them any more. We’ve replaced lots of our favourites on DVD and to be honest there are so many films on these days, we just don’t need to store stuff at home any more.
So, I pulled them all out of the shelving under my stairs and stacked them. The pre-recorded ones are going to the charity shop (I checked – people still buy them). But what do I do with these? Nobody is going to want them but I don’t want to put them on the landfill.
I read a few forums last night about recycling them. There were various replies which included: paying for a recycling company to receive them in the post!; completely dismantling them and using parts for craft activities (knitting with the tape); completely dismantling them and sorting according to materials then recycling; making a big armchair from them and calling it art.
Our recycling facilities are limited here on the Isle of Wight. A lot of bulk waste is incinerated and this is turned into fuel pellets which in turn are used to generate electricity. The usual things like paper, glass, etc are recycled here. We do have a good organic recycling scheme though it’s not used enough. Textiles are only wanted in usable condition so I take my worn out clothing to the Red Cross who shred them and use the fibres. Aluminium cans are collected in various places but the local authority would incinerate these as part of household waste.
Plastics? Nothing here. To transport these (or their components) to the mainland would be counter-productive.
Maybe our local college’s art department could make use of them – though they’d end up being chucked out even then.
So tonight’s job is to do some more research and put a few ‘do you want …’ messages around the place, but they’ve got until Monday at the very latest and then they’re going. One way or another.
And I’ll hate that.
