26 September 2009. I discovered that staff in the London Borough of Haringey had recently been blocked from accessing Flickr and other social media websites.

I was later told there’d been a policy banning staff from using these sites. A software block now prevented staff access to sites such as YouTube, Flickr, and Facebook,

Other local councils are experimenting with social media websites as a way improving community engagement; getting feedback from service users; and encouraging networking between professional staff in different agencies,

"Join us on Facebook ! "

Haringey itself has some social media initiatives. As does Islington, one of our neighbouring London Boroughs. They extended this invitation to their residents.

"We’ve launched a Facebook group called "Recycling Islington" to help keep you updated about new services, events and campaigns in the borough. You’ll also be able to share tips and ideas with other local residents on how to cut waste and recycle more."

"If you’re on Facebook, simply log in and search for Recycling Islington."

Below, Liz explains the reasons why Haringey Council should make a particular effort. She also gives a link to an interesting neighbourhood project in St Peters, Highfields, Leicester who are using YouTube videos to combat littering!
