If more people would recycle it would have a major impact on our landfills and the environment as a whole.
Many items found in landfills today could be recycled, and would lessen the impact on the environment. Items such as plastics, glass, styrofoam, and others can last tens of thousands of years buried in the earth, taking up room in our landfills and causing pollution as well.
All of these materials, Plastics, glass, styrofoam, paper,etc. can be recycled and put back into use instead of polluting our mother earth for millenniums to come.

Recycling has some impact in the sense that in most cases it is cheaper to use recycled material instead of virgin material (paper, glass and specially metal).
The biggest impact does not come from recycling but from reducing waste, specially on the things we do often like eating and drinking.
If we can change our ways and avoid bottled drinks, and instead carry a reusable bottle for drinking tap water, tea and coffee, that is a lot of energy saved right there.
Same with food, if we can realize that not eating that plastic packaged meal does not mean we will starve, we can either prepare quick foods (salads, sandwiches and pasta are super easy to do after all!) or choose foods that do not use plastic for packaging and are “finger food” that do not require plastic serviceware.
I can tell you this is possible because I have done it for years and I have not died from starvation or spent my life cooking. We really do not need to trash the environment in order to survive. We need to realize that if we do not have those ten minutes to feed and hydrate ourselves properly, we are simply living beyond our means and we shouldn’t.
I know this goes against 90% of the advertising you see out there but we can’t continue being such noxious parasites just to make some bad business happy.
