Question by Ben: How much money could be saved by a small business by recycling a portion their waste?
How much money could be saved by a car dealership, or any small business, by recycling a portion of their waste? I am doing a project for school on how small businesses, particularly car dealerships though because I work at one, could save money by recycling some of their waste.

What exactly does a car dealership have to recycle? They can’t reuse parts from the repair department- they were changed out because they were bad to begin with. possibly could recycle water used for the constant washing of the cars on the lot – but that would be a stretch. Any business could recycle the excess printer paper for scratch paper.
You might consider a different business – construction where scrap wire or copper could be turned in for cash.
Just had a thought – I know an auto repair shop that uses the old oil from oil changes to burn in a home made 50 gallon drum heater – I’m sure it is not environmentally great, but it saves them a bundle on heating costs (natural gas heat for a 1600 sq. ft. shop cost about 0 per month).

They pay a rate for their garbage to be removed. If you reduce this then you can discuss a lower rate. Get a metal dumpster and put all scrap in it and another for cardboard and aluminium. Even oil that is kept seperate from other fluids can be sold for a few dollars a drum instead of paying for it to be took off. Can even use the oil in waste oil heaters. It is just a matter of collecting these things in a way that is effecent to take to the salvage yards that take them. Most of the hard part is to get people to start doing these things.
