yes. When recycling trucks are lumbering through neighborhoods, spewing deisel gas , picking up a few puny pieces of metal and plastic, maybe collecting a few hundred pounds TOTAL all day, that’s a huge waste. Not to mention, citizens waste millionis of gallons of water rinsing out those cans and plastic containers. Money and energy is wasted sorting out all that junk… and finally HUGE amounts of energy is completely wasted melting down the plastic, or grinding down the plastic and otherwise preparing it for re-use.
It takes fossil fuels to melt down all that junk.
It takes fossil fuels to drive all those trucks just to pick up a few hundred pounds of junk.
It takes fossil fuels to sort all that crap.

It requires less energy to make products from pre existing materials, especially glass and aluminum, then it does to make new material to make the products. And that includes the trucks that drive around to pick them up.
And it’s not even close.
It saves energy.
Saving energy IS saving money.
