Waste Management a Green Solution towards Green Living

49 Recycle or burn?
recycling waste

My Halloween protest at Wrexham council meeting to discuss waste disposal proposals. The council has been trying to foist an incinerator on us for years. Now it has suddenly been decided that it’s not worth the battle, so they’re going to turn all our un-recyclable waste into fuel pellets and send them to be burnt elsewhere.

The depressing thing is that the anti-incinerator campaign groups seem to be supporting this on some dodgy argument that the kilns which they’re going to feed with our rubbish would have been burning stuff (fossil fuels?) anyway. And they aren’t in Wrexham.

Note Wrexham Council’s attractive corporate "W" on the placard.

The incinerator was to be run by HLC, of Neath Port Talbot fame. HLC are also involved in the new pellet plan.

Managing waste has been a depressing issue since the day it began. It has also been an intriguing subject that tends to amplify with massive growth in our population. Immense industrial developments and colossal ascend in populace are proportionately contributing to waste disposal management techniques. There have been various methods to go for better waste disposal that is commonly practice in landfills. Proper waste management or waste disposal is considered as another branch of green solutions in making our world a better place to live in. This major issue surrounds the quality of our environment that calls for big solutions.

Climate change causes daily commotions and now everyone seems to be engaging into green projects or solutions to do a bit of a cause for our environment. Homes are being characterized as an eco friendly property that is evaluated in certain criteria’s such as waste management, energy efficiency and water efficiency. As the number of individuals converting to a greener lifestyle augments, it would lead to aid in handling costly energy demands and diminishing carbon dioxide emissions that would ultimately fight global warming concerns. An opportunity such as these could pave their way to an increasing mainstream of green solutions that is applicable in our homes and businesses.

Benefits of waste management

•    Proper waste management and utilization has the ability to control the spreading of harmful diseases that comes either from pests that lives in these filthy areas.

•    New incineration methods are being deployed in order to create fuel or steam that would help in generating green energy for our homes and communities.

•    Recycling waste and converting them to new products that would lessen the demands for our natural resources.

•    By abiding with the 3R process which is reduce, reuse and recycle we will be able to save money upon salvaging materials that could still be of use.

•    By utilizing the proper waste management techniques you reduce waste, create less pollution, diminish harmful green house gas emissions and reduce the dependence on our natural resources.

Innovative techniques for waste disposal

Carbon sequestration

As we all know that landfills are a major source of harmful green house gases that contributes to the effects of global warming. Removing carbon emissions from the method of sequestration could play an important role in reducing the net emissions of GHG’s in our atmosphere. Carbon sequestration can be applied to the following raw materials that are usually found in landfills such as wood products, yard trimmings, food scrapes and other biodegradable materials. Upon doing so, measuring the carbon emissions through carbon footprinting allows us to collect data upon distinguishing the direct and indirect carbon emissions in our atmosphere.

Gasification process/ Anaerobic digestion

It is a series of process that breaks down biodegradable materials by limiting the amount of oxygen that converts waste into energy. This process helps reduces carbon emissions of landfill gases in the atmosphere. It provides as an alternative for fossil fuel consumption thus providing green energy.

Environmental and health problems are being caused without the safety measures of proper waste disposal, unrestrained burning and haphazard disposal. There is a huge future and benefit in properly managing our waste. We must look into new possibilities that may provide us with cost efficient and sustainable benefits from the waste that we discard.
