Best Features of a Recycling Bin

When shopping for recycling bins, there are a number of features that you should look for in order to make the right choice. There are numerous designs and sizes of bins and recycling boxes in the market, so here are the most important things to consider.

You should first decide whether your recycling bin will be placed indoors or outdoors. In both cases, the size of the bin should be your concern since indoor bins are usually smaller than outdoor ones. The size of the bin should accommodate the amount of recyclable waste materials that your home produces on a daily and weekly basis.

The bin should also be well labeled to clearly indicate the recyclables from the ordinary trash. Most bins and boxes today come with separate compartments for glass, paper, plastics and other recyclable materials, and these sections should be visible. This helps with encouraging people, whether at home or at work, to sort their trash every time they throw it away.

A recycling bin or box should also be easy to clean and maintain. A clean bin promotes recycling because you are more likely to throw trash in a hygienic looking bin than otherwise. It should also be easy to empty to encourage frequent waste removal for recycling.

Durability is another important feature of a good recycling box or bin. It should be made of sturdy plastic that will endure many years of handling. Outdoor bins should withstand the elements and should not fade due to exposure to sunlight or damage from water. Remember to place your bin in a convenient location where it will not get any sudden impacts or too much contact with the elements to prolong its resilience.

A self closing lid is great for any bin to keep insects from getting in. Such lids are very effective in preventing bees, ants and other pests which can make your living or working environment uncomfortable. Some animals can open the lids on outdoor bins, so make sure that the lids can keep them away.

Other features such as color and design are also important, but consider the above mentioned features first. In your quest for sustainable living, do get solar garden lights for your home to minimize the costs of energy.
