Question by JF: How do I get a recycling bin for my condo?
I know, silly question, but I moved into a condo recently and want to get a recycling bin for the trash so I can be more green. I don’t think they are sold in stores, or are they? But how do I actually get a recycling bin?

Talk to the building manager or some of the neighbors.
There may already be one that you do not know about.
Often times, with so many units, there is a dumpster or area just for recycling.
If not call the local waste management company to see if they will supply you with one.
At one complex I know the management is very green. They have a room next to the elevators set aside as a free-cycle location. Whenever someone moves out and leaves stuff behind, if it is usable it goes in the room. Whatever is left for a while is donated to charity.

Our city recycles, but our condo complex wasn’t participating because they didn’t want the bins cluttering up the place, so they built a recycling center and now the recycling people come once a week and pick it up just like they do the garbage. Check into that with your city and/or condo board. You pay taxes for this if it is included, so force the issue till they cooperate. I did.
If your city recycles, they will bring you the bins for free, but make sure your condo doesn’t have rules against garbage cans/recycle bins on the sidewalks.

The city has a new program starting in mid-March where they will provide residents with 40 or 90 gallon blue roll carts for recycling. If you click the link above you can sign up for one online. There is a phone number to call, too. If you don’t need a cart, but just a bin call them and they’ll put you on the list. I called for additional bins recently because mine weren’t enough and they delivered them that same day. They are very polite and friendly when you call, too, which is a bonus 🙂
