Less than a year ago I helped to start a hardware re-use and recycling program through my church. Although we only tried to market it to the service to the 50 person congregation, there was clearly an interest in the program, and word got out, and our hardware room quickly began to fill up with donated e-waste.

Today was the annual computer recycling drive at Earlham College, and I had this whole truckload of stuff to recycle, which doesn’t include some of the better equipment we decided to keep for re-use.

Will this felt successful, next year I hope we will able to find ways to re-use even more, which is lower impact than than recycling. I’d also like make the service available to more people, perhaps following the model of Free Geek.

If you are around Richmond, Indiana and are interested to help with this, please get in touch. Thanks go to Jonathan Ulrich for leadership of the project lately, Les Williams for loaning the truck, and the Richmond Church of the Brethren for hosting the project. Recycle Force from Indianapolis provided the recycling service.
