When it comes to recycling and reusing there is a big difference. Sometimes it is hard to know the difference between what is reusable and what is recyclable. Fortunately, it’s not that complicated. The recycling and reusing goal is to keep things out of overflowing landfills by extending the useful life of the item. The two tactics just go about accomplishing this in different ways.
Recycling involves reprocessing an old item such as plastic bottles, cans, glass or newspapers by turning it into something new again. Recycled paper products may be reprocessed into other paper products such as toilet paper. Recycling old tires can become a compound used to asphalt roads or added to concrete. Recycling old cardboard containers becomes new cardboard containers. Recycling plastic bottles are made into compounds for composite material.
Reusing avoids the reprocessing plants completely. Old items such as containers and bags can be used again in their current condition for a similar or completely different purpose. Old appliances can be used as parts to repair other appliances. Plastic takeout food containers can be reused as food storage containers at home. Plastic bags can be transformed into waterproof liners for trash or waste baskets.
Basically reusing extends the life of a product into some useful purpose from the time it is purchased until it has to be discarded. When you extend the lifetime of a product you not only reduce the need to buy something new you also are contributing to saving the energy to produce a new one to replace it and is good for the environment. Reusing allows us to get the most out of products and the raw materials it took to make it rather than contributing to more waste by throwing it away.
Reusing tips:
Reuse bags, boxes and containers. Turn old shoe boxes into mini storage containers, packaging for gifts or make a treasure chest for children.
Rather than buying a new product, borrow, rent or share items you use infrequently.
When children outgrow their toys, books, cribs, high chairs and strollers, sell or donate the items to a charitable organization rather than throw them away.
Purchase quality or durable products so they will have a longer life cycle. Initially you may spend more but they’ll last longer which will save you money over time.
Recycle tips:
Become a devoted full circle recycler. Sort and discard products according to your community’s recycling requirements and always try to purchase products made from recycled material.
Waste reduction by recycling starts at home. Do not try to beat the system. Many towns impose small fines for violation of recycling requirements.
Remember that your recyclable junk may be someone else’s treasure.
Although most communities have recycling requirements everyone must do their part. Don’t try to beat the system. Most towns recycling centers become cost effective by selling recycled waste. The revenue they obtain off sets the cost for the effort. In fact many communities make a small profit from recycling. If you’re not sure about your community’s recycling procedures or standards for recycling and reusing, check with your local town officials.
