Packard Jennings – The Pocket Survival Guide

Participants are invited to meet at SoEx for a 20-minute workshop to fold instructional pamphlets on how to devise an emergency raft out of recycled product packaging in case of a catastrophic flood- a consequence of consumer waste and mass production that contributes to pollution, and global warming.

Once the Pocket Survival Guides are folded, participants will enter various stores and install them on consumer products to replicate “instant savings coupons.” Future customers will be happy to find their household purchases subverted by public art!

Pocket Survival Guide is also in NYC through Dec 19th, 2009

Did you know that about 40% of the municipal wastes that we throw away everyday, 40 percent of which are paper? Also, did you know that you recycling around three feet worth of used paper (this is actually tantamount to three months worth of daily newspaper) could actually save one tree?

Think about it.

There are actually numerous trivia existing that promotes recycling paper. Have you ever wondered why floods would come up so easily each time it would rain? If you would come to think about it, the situation is not like this years back. It could go on raining for hours and still there is no flood. What is the relevance of flood to recycling paper, you may ask? Well, the floods that we are experiencing nowadays have the lack of trees to blame and primarily we lack trees because we continue to cut them down so we could manufacture paper. The very paper that is very essential to man’s daily activities and existence.

The further destruction of our ecosystem due to the lack of trees is something that environmentalists are very worried about. More than the catastrophic flood that could kill many people and destroy numerous livelihood, the possible extinction of trees on the face of the planet has many detrimental consequences. And the worst case scenario have something to do with the possibility of human extinction.

Now, that is already scary and of course we don’t want that to happen so the least we can do for our environment is to be conscious to its needs and we should learn to take care of it. One thing should be our willingness to recycle paper.

There are three kinds of paper that you can use to recycle waste paper into new and usable paper products. The Mill broke are paper trimmings and other paper scrap that comes from paper manufacturing company. This is recycled internally in a paper mill. The other kind of paper waste is the pre-consumer waste. These are paper materials which are left from the paper mill. These paper has been discarded before it was ready for consumer use.

And finally, we have post-consumer wastes. These are paper materials that are discarded after consumer use. Examples of which are old magazines, old newspapers, office waste, old telephone directories, and other residential mixed paper. In general, paper that is found to be suitable for recycling is called “scrap paper”.
