Packard Jennings – The Pocket Survival Guide
Participants are invited to meet at SoEx for a 20-minute workshop to fold instructional pamphlets on how to devise an emergency raft out of recycled product packaging in case of a catastrophic flood- a consequence of consumer waste and mass production that contributes to pollution, and global warming.
Once the Pocket Survival Guides are folded, participants will enter various stores and install them on consumer products to replicate “instant savings coupons.” Future customers will be happy to find their household purchases subverted by public art!

Recycling waste
The process of producing a spring or wire form consists of purchasing wire and forming it into a different shape, apart form the possible addition of low temperature heat treatment there is very little or no waste material in the process. Airedale Springs can still coil springs by hand! Waste is more significant in support services and secondary processes such as grinding, shot peening, cleaning, painting or plating.
Airedale Springs has monitored its total waste volumes for the last ten years. This is a useful exercise as it provides a measure of the effectiveness of waste saving actions as well as providing the basis for an environmental reports that some of our customers regularly require.
It also differentiates to the difference between swarf and scarp. Swarf is the legitimate waste by-product of a manufacturing process, where as scrap is avoidable waste.
Airedale Springs makes every effort to avoid harmful pollution and progressively reduce the amount of waste produced. Detailed records are maintained of all materials used and waste generated, covering everything from waste material to packaging, paint, plastic, tin cans to name but a few.
It also covers the use of resources, electricity, light, air, gas, water etc., how much we consume relative to how much business we undertake.
Major packaging efficiencies have been achieved through the introduction of plastic rather than cardboard boxes for internal movement of goods. Cardboard boxes could only be used three times on average before being sent to landfill. Like wise in partnership with some of its major customers goods are now largely supplied to customers in plastic containers, which are then returned for reuse.
Emphasis is placed on making the most effective use of all natural resources for the benefit of the Company and the overall public interest. The 19th century Grade 2 listed mill complex benefits from the maximum use of natural light. The Victorians knew what they were doing! Electric light is only used where necessary. Reductions in electric light usage have been achieved through the provision of individual light switches, which can be turned on and off for specific lights rather than in blocks.
With help from our employees we have found many ways of recycling some of our waste.
Old pallets and wood burnt in wood burning stoves.
Grinding wheels used for garden flags.
Shredded paper for cat litter.
Used printer cartridges to a recycling charity.
Surplus springs for local schools art / science projects.
Of course there are other items which we recycle through approved sources such as waste cardboard, wire, strip, plastic cups and light bulbs. We can all do our bit to stop filling holes in the ground, after all it usually costs less to recycle.
