On our street, we alternate weeks: one Tuesday, paper; the next, bottles, cans and plastic. Last year, we had a lot of snow one Monday night and the recycling guys never came. It had been a paper morning, so the next Tuesday, we figured we’d put out cans. But they didn’t take them because they wanted the previous week’s paper. So, we put out cans the Tuesday after that and they still wanted paper, because they wanted to get back on schedule.

I used to check the neighbors’ bins, to see what they thought was going out, but then I found they were all checking each other’s bins, including ours, and that no one really knew. I think the recycling guys get bored and like to mess with our heads.

Last Tuesday, they didn’t come, too much snow again — wimps — and I didn’t want to take any chances — so both bins go out, the paper bin identified with a pajarita, after the European fashion.
