How a waste disposal unit can save you time and help you recycle
Waste disposal units were once considered to be a very American kitchen gadget, but since the UK has been pushed into recycling and considering the environment when disposing of waste, waste disposal units have become much more popular over here.
New build houses are starting to be built with a waste disposal unit built into the sink but many people won’t have a waste disposal unit as part of their kitchen so what should you consider when buying a waste disposal unit for your home?
Waste disposal systems are a really easy and quick way of getting rid of food waste and tidying up after yourself. Quickly disposing of waste can stop bad smells from forming and you are less likely to attract pests if you dispose of waste using a disposal unit. By feeding your old food waste into a unit that will be churned up and removed through the pipes you will have less waste in your normal garbage and this contributes to a much better environment.
You can choose from batch feed or continuous feed waste disposal units, in a batch feed you load up the unit then switch on the power to grind up the food before adding a second batch. A continuous feed is switched on and off by a switch which will grind the food into small bits with the help of a stream of running water. The batch feed is the most popular solution as it is considered to be a bit safer if you have children around who like to play with kitchen gadgets.
If you haven’t got an inbuilt waste disposal in your sink, make sure you sink has a big enough base to install a waste disposal unit. The waste pipe needs to have a long ‘fall’ so that waste does not get stuck and cause a blockage.
It is easy enough to install a waste disposal unit but we do recommend getting in a professional as the unit will need an electrical supply and you may need an additional socket for it. It is a legal requirement in the UK that when installing electrical equipment you hire a qualified electrician and by using an electrician you can be sure that the waste disposal unit is installed safely and correctly and the guarantee will still be valid.
