Question by Ross W: What Are The Procedures for recycling and the disposal of hazardous waste?

Answer by rmbrruffian
It depends on what the hazardous waste is. If it is paint or household chemicals, local municipalities will have periodic collection days during the summer. You have to call and find out. If it is something of more significance, you need to call your regional EPA. They will tell you what to do.

This is actually a fairly complicated question to answer…and I hope I remember all the information correctly, because it’s been a lot of years since I’ve needed to recall that information…

First off, if a waste material is recycled, it is NOT considered a “waste”, especially since the company is probably being paid for their waste material that is going to be recycled. The term waste implies that the material’s useful life is over, and the only thing that can therefore be done with it is treatment or disposal.

Now, if you’ve got a waste material, that cannot be recycled, and potentially could harm the environment, animals, or people, then that material is considered a hazardous waste…and hazardous wastes are typically defined by one of three categories: Toxicity, Characteristic, and Listed.

All hazardous waste is the “property” of the generator – even after it is disposed of in a hazardous waste landfill. That “ownership” is described as “cradle to grave”. They generated the waste, so they’re liable for that waste even after it is disposed of. Also, all hazardous waste needs to be labeled as a hazardous waste, with this label:

The contact information for the waste generator needs to be written legibly on the label, as does the other information listed on the label, including characteristics of the material, description of the material, etc. The generated waste also needs to be stored and transported in a compatible container.

Some waste streams can be treated so they become non-hazardous. Treatment methods include neutralization, incineration, and stabilization.

There are actually many, many procedures for storing, transporting, and disposing of a hazardous waste…

You can also look up CERCLA or RCRA – which are regulations regarding hazardous materials/wastes.

Not safe enough. There are spills and leaching all the time. The best way of disposal is not the create the waste and the companies that do should not be overseeing themselves.

Are you talking household hazardous waste?
    Other waste?

Some cities have ways of handling waste and certain times of the year they accept waste from citizens.

It just depends what you are talking about, what waste, who created it.

    Nuke
    Med
    caustic household

There is so much waste and toxic material you would need to be more specific
