make orange zest out of it, and include it in some of your recipes.

I dry them in a slow oven and use for firestarters – the orange oil is highly flammable. Also makes a nice scent in the fireplace 😉

  • COACH says:

Get a grater and make orange zest out of the peel and use that in your cooking.

Candied orange peel, try allrecipes.com for a recipe.

Dark Chocolate Covered Candied Orange Peels

    72 pieces 1 day 6 hours prep
    3 sunkist oranges
    1/2 cup water
    1 cup sugar
    water, for blanching

Cut oranges in half. Juice the halves.
“Gut” the orange halves of all pulp & pith.
Slice the halves into strips or triangles (I do triangles).
Blanch orange peels so they will retain their colour.
Candie the orange peels: aproximately 1/2 cup water & 1 cup sugar per 3 oranges; bring all 3 to a boil then immediately reduce heat to a simmer; simmer until all liquid has been absorbed by the oranges; STIR FREQUENTLY!
Toss the candied orange peels in sugar to lightly coat, then spread in one layer on a baking sheet.
Bake in a low temperature oven (200 to 250F) until orange peels are sticky but not wet.
    COOL.
Melt dark chocolate in a double-boiler and proceed to dip the candied orange peels in the chocolate and lay on waxed paper in a cool, dry place to set. A cold cellar is ideal. If you have a garage, there is good in colder climates.
***One of the best things about these candies is that you can spread out making them over a week or two! Refrigerate orange peels after each step in an airtight container.
***Use oranges with very thick peels. I find sunkist oranges are very good to use for that reason.

If you have a garbage disposal put the Orange peels in that it will help keep it clean and plus it will have a citrus smell

  • COblonde says:

I use pieces in hot tea for great orange flavoring, put the rest down garbage disposal to freshen.

  • lana475 says:

yup, candied orange peel or flavor your sugar w/ it. you can put a piece of fresh orange peel directly into your sugar and leave it there for a few days to a week. it’s a lot like making vanilla sugar, when you put a vanilla bean in your sugar. only put the orange peel in the jar instead.

here are a bunch of different recipes for candied orange peels>>>>>

Like everybody says, the orange zest (which I consider fine shavings) is great; or chunky little pieces in cream cheese frosting or muffins or pancakes.
Use some orange peel when you panfry some salmon– it’s good with teriyaki sauce and honey and garlic as a salmon garnish.
My mother used to dry out orange peel and burn it in an incense burner– it probably can be added to a hot potpourri–
and don’t forget to add some dried orange peel to tea! And use some in holiday punch…

  • LadyT says:

I read there is a Feng Shui cleansing thing with 9 oranges in water walked around the house…..I can’t remember the details, but look it up under Yahoo search…Feng Shui oranges, maybe. Then you can put them in the garbage disposal, or dry them out & use as pottpouri (sp?).

Ok, I searched and found something, see the link provided. You gotta flick the water…..read it.

heh heh heh well you could grow your own penecillin….

  • D.ROCK says:

    eat it

  • Dawn C says:

You can use it outside in your flower beds to keep the cats from spraying. You can also use it as potpouri. Great way to make your house smell better.

  • D.Wilson says:

Hi, well you can make orange peel tea, you can boil the water and place the orange peel in the hot water. Leave it in for about 2-5 mins, then add about 2 tea spoons of sugar, stir and enjoy.
Its very good for cold and sinus.

  • caveman says:

Well, another idea is to freeze it till summer & then throw it into your flower beds, if you have them. It keeps the cats out of your beds. They don’t like the smell.

  • Roubini says:

You can make a sweet for the spoon (glyko tou koutaliou), as we say in Greece! Boil the large pieces with lot of sugar for over two hours!
Or you can make a beauty mask for your face!Cut in small pieces and stir them with some honey and yoghurt! It’s very refreshing for your skin!

  • JML says:

You can use the zest of it for a variety of uses, such as salads marinades, and lots of dessert recipies.

  • justwondering says:

put them in your garbage disposal as it will leave a fresh Smell in your sink

  • Concerned Mom says:

Put them in a pot of water on your stove and let them simmer – cheap, easy and great smelling potpourri. My grandmother used to do this every Christmas and she would throw some cinnamon sticks in with the peels – I do it every year and it reminds me of her!

  • Cheyanne says:

I put it down the garbage disposal, and it makes the whole kitchen smell VERY good and fresh. I also do that when the last couple of oranges get rotten, I’ll cut them in half chop them up in the disposal as well. That good citris scent lasts for a while.

  • ben k says:

Grate it in to a dish like a duck dish or something

  • Cobalt says:

You can dry it – thread it on string and hang it somewhere dry – and then use dried orange peel in recipes or in potpourri. At this time of year you could also cut simple shapes out of it and hang it on the holiday tree, if you have one.

  • discokevin2001 says:

Place them in a decorative bowl. They will leave a nice aroma in your house.

  • Joyce D says:

cut them up in small pieces put down disposal to freshen, or make potpouri out of them.

  • namecalling says:

    Freeze some .

Many recipes call for orange or lemon zest

  • PHIL M says:

you can freeze it and use it as you need for zest in cakes and other recipes.
