Packard Jennings – The Pocket Survival Guide
Participants are invited to meet at SoEx for a 20-minute workshop to fold instructional pamphlets on how to devise an emergency raft out of recycled product packaging in case of a catastrophic flood- a consequence of consumer waste and mass production that contributes to pollution, and global warming.
Once the Pocket Survival Guides are folded, participants will enter various stores and install them on consumer products to replicate “instant savings coupons.” Future customers will be happy to find their household purchases subverted by public art!
Pocket Survival Guide is also in NYC through Dec 19th, 2009

“High recycling waste Mobile , Toner cartridges, ink cartridges, MP3 “, armed with such a small ad small traders become bridges across the street in many cities, universities and similar e-city” landscape “;” high recycling refrigerators,
Washing machine The size of home appliances, “the sound of silence from time to time to break the residential area.
This ubiquitous landscape are all in the moment to remind us that electronic products are coming out of the peak.
By Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau 2008 statistics, the province-owned
TV Machine, refrigerator, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, about 180 million units, if each cycle of 10 years out of it, every year there are only 12,000,000 units of waste electrical appliances, the country is second to none.
But these e-waste disposal is not optimistic. “At present, the basic flow of electronic waste in our province in the regulatory vacuum.” Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau Director Wu Hongjie Wu Kong revealed a large number of the physical dismantling and classification through simple e-waste to enter after the “underground treatment plant”, to the environment significant pollution problems.
Proliferation of tumor In Guangzhou Baiyun District zhongluotan a village, reporters saw the government banned the burning garbage, plastic and acid workshop where there is still, however, the inspection team in order to avoid law enforcement, most of them are very subtle, often In the back street office or of a field outside the village Abandoned quietly dry.
Here in the small workshop where, can be called “hammer ax to drop,” the means of disposing of the 19th century was used in the 21st century, electronic products, in the brutal dismantling then after acid leaching, fire and other original process, after disposal of waste despite cross-flow, without any processing flows directly into the sewers or the ground. Large tracts of waste land in the fields around the village on the same filled with garbage, and some are still braving the smoke plume from the landfill.
Zhongshan College of Earth and Environmental Resources Research Centre, Doctoral Advisor Yong-Zhang told reporters, a computer has more than 700 kinds of chemical materials, more than half harmful. Dismantling process is very prominent secondary pollution, and many households sneak dismantling and burning of waste discharge cleaning waste water, groundwater and soil air are causing serious pollution. If not addressed, more “Guiyu” will appear, and distributed throughout.
According to sources, Qingyuan Shek Kok there in the South China Sea water, e-waste dismantling has formed a complete industrial chain, the main method of family workshops, almost everyone involved, even the school children home, also along with the adults with the dismantling e-waste.
According to incomplete statistics, although the province engaged in dismantling of waste materials, processing, use of more than 2,000 enterprises, but often in the “hungry” situation. The size of the province with all kinds of waste materials recovery site more than 30,000, and the streets of hawkers, millions of individual households to provide a sufficient disassembling sources. In particular the recycling of electronic appliances in order to recover personal dispersed mainly to the original fire, acid and other means to deal with, environmental pollution and a growing threat.
Lack of supervision An environmental expert said, we have not solve the “foreign garbage” flooding problems, “earth waste” another ferocious.
Shek Kok When asked why the head of the local government to allow this to happen, he said, “These e-waste collection points and dismantling workshops indeed great impact on the local environment, but countries do not expressly allow they are engaged in this, as the Government would be unable to put people off. “
More worrying is that a large number of toxic and hazardous substances including circuit boards, electronic components,
CRT (CRT) glass and other major “dismantling product” flow of control in the vacuum state, to become a major environmental pollution problems.
TV in a company engaged in waste recycling dismantling workshops, a small
Boss
CRT glass, pointing down dismantling, circuit board, told reporters, “Who to higher prices, we sell it to, now mainly sold to some of the Pearl River Delta factory.”
