Question by tplizzey: How can I start a community recycling program in a small, rural community?
Any ideas on companies that might be interested in setting up a recycling center?

The easy part is getting stores and friends to buy or accept recycling trash cans. The hard part is driving to a bigger town to recycle it. I lived in a small, rural community for a long time, so I know. The big thing is getting people to want to recycle and want to place paper, cans, etc in a different trash can. Make the trash cans really accessible and recognizable. Good luck and I hope you can make a difference!

Ask or send a letter to the local council. Or even if you are up for it, make your own!!! It always is good to go your own way or more over, to have it your own way.

Believe it or not ~ there are tons of places in our country that do not promote recycling. My suggestion to you is to contact your nearest major city’s recyclers and get some info from them. Who knows, maybe for a little media attention, they may be willing to come to your town on a regular basis to collect recycled goods from the residents. I would start there though.

You can reuse paper by using both sides of the paper, or when you use pencil to write something on the paper, you can erase it and reuse. You can also recycle paper by throwing it to the recycling bin. You can reduce the usage of paper too. You also can encourage people to recycle by putting up posters at the community centre or at the block, etc.
