Question by babyjokestress: How would I start a recycle program for work?
I work at Babies R Us and everyday the trash cans are filled with some many pieces of paper. The reason we use so much paper is because since we’re a baby store, we have a baby registry. It iritates me seeing so much paper being thrown away. How would I go about starting a recycle program for my job that people will follow?

Ask you local recycling center to provide your store with recycling bins in exchange for the material

If you company does not want the added cost of recycle pick up at your store have them ask your garbage collection company if they have a drop off site. I work at one in wisconsin and we have many route customer that bring their recycle matterial to our shop and drop it off here for free instead of paying us to have secondary containers at the business. good luck

Also, ask your store manager to talk to your waste hauler to establish an instore recycling program.

The best thing to do would be to make a suggestion if your company has a system to accept employee suggestions.

However, you need to be careful in what you do. Babies R Us is a pretty big company and they have probably looked at the cost of managing a recycling program versus the benefits to them. If you spend a lot of time pushing on this, they may not appreciate it.
I used to work at a place where the blue paper bins were in every cubicle and some people felt so good about how much we recycled. Others would attack if you didn’t use them or put the wrong things in them. I just laughed about the different reactions that people had because as one of the few employees that worked late, I could see the janitors throw them all into the same big trash can. Oh well, it certainly made some people happy.
