You could make a model of the water treatment plants, i dont know if you could make a physical model that works, but a representation or diagram might be possible

What do you think? Answer below!

Worms work but may take some time to see results,
Same as with a compost project.

You may want to save alum cans, steel cans, and plastic from 3-5 homes. Yours, relatives, friends etc.

Keep a log of weekly counts and weights.
    Alum cans bring 55-70 cents/lb
    steel household cans are 20cents/lb.
Don’t know where to sell plastic/newspaper
Ck out Borg Steel on north Lewes…

To end project take metal to recycle plant and report income.

Interview management at recycle yard on volume the receive monthly .
Also contact Mayors answer line on Tulsa efforts to recycle and include
    the answers in project report.

In the city of LA, Cali. they filter the sewage from the road runoff into ‘smart foam’ like material. it was on an episode of ‘G Word’ on the channel planet green. youtube is what would use or just gen. googling the idea of the system. the filter lets the rain go into the sea water eventually but keeps the oil from cars and such toxins into the foam and turns it into a hardened matter. it can then be later burned for a fuel. you could easily use a sponge or pack a bunch of insulator foam … etc. into a tube and show how this works. the city of LA has over 4000 filters in their drains. just an idea. definitely something to look into though! Best of luck!

When you take a shower don’t drain the water. Use that water to flush toilets or water flowers in the garden. Very simple way to re-use waste water!

Vermicomposting is a good idea that should be easy for a school project.

You could also do something on constructed wetlands or living machines: http://hubpages.com/hub/Living-Machines

  • Chris I says:

I would go with the worms. (Vermicomposting) You can keep them in the classroom and the children can see the results.

Also you can take two identical plants. Put one in worm compost and one in regular dirt. If they get the same sun and water the plant in worm compost will grow much better.

This girl can give you all the info http://wormgirlmontreal.wordpress.com/
She does classroom visits around Montreal. The kids are fascinated.

Recycling cafeteria food scraps using worms. Get a storage bin that is used in houses. Take two plastic pipes long enough the pass through the bins. drill them full of holes. Drill holes in the bin to accept the pipes. Take left over school paper or newspapers and shred them. Dampen them. not soaking wet and fill up the botttom of the bin to cover the piipes you installed. Go to a bait shop and get a carton of red worms. They can cope better then night crawlers. Cover them in the damp paper. Collect vegetable scraps only. No meat or dairy products. About equal weight to the worms. Bury them in the paper. The worms will migrate to the scraps. Watch that you don’t put too much in the bin. It can spoil. Add only as often as the prior batch has been eaten. The wdorms will turn the scraps into a sweet smelling black soil looking mixture. It can then be used to grow plants in pots.

There is a group that recylces Crocks. You can look under the companies information. They supposedly send the recycled crocks to underprivilidged countries.

You can be the first school to drink your own waste
    recycled sewage drinking water.
First flush your loo to wash it all down the sewerage pit
then connect the pipes to drink sewer water.
For those interested in drinking recycled sewer water you could start a business of selling it bottled in different flavors.
Monash University specialist John Langford said using recycled sewage had helped provide Singapore with extra drinking water.

Take a bunch of pipes, place it into an aquarium, pee into it, throw some trash into the aquarium and there you have a simulation of our sewers.
